Inez Zahner

Inez Mauree Lockard Zahner, 76, of Dysart, passed away peacefully at her home from an extended illness, on January 25, 2024, with her devoted husband, Allen, and beloved kitties by her side. She was a cherished wife, mother, stepmother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend. Inez was born on December 23, 1947, in Vinton, the daughter of Earl and Marjorie (Hayes) Lockard. She had multiple talents to tout, but her accomplishments in basketball brought her immense pride. Because of her jump shot, she is the 51st all-time leading scorer in Iowa girls six on six history. She remained a lifelong basketball fan and enjoyed watching games with her husband. After years of persistence, working full time and going to school part time, she graduated with honors and touched many lives as an advocate for domestic abuse prevention and her career working with college students. Inez had an impeccable sense of style. She was captivating and left an unforgettable impression when meeting her. She was a one-of-a-kind character with an indominable spirit. Inez charmed with her sharp wit and sense of humor. She had a special glint in her eye and smile when sharing joy with others. Her irreverent jokes made many blush, which tickled her even more. Inez was like the swans she loved – part of a loyal and devoted pair. She and Allen were partners in good and challenging times, their extraordinary bond brought them through life’s ups and downs. They went from dancing together in their dating years to holding hands in side-by-side recliners in retirement. Together, they fought a valiant fight against her illness. She even remarked that her Parkinson’s made her keep falling for him all over again. Her life’s adventures and travels took her from Garrison all the way to Germany, and finally to Dysart where she enjoyed being back home again, visiting with family and friends, watching the seasons, birds, squirrels and baby foxes out her back window. Inez leaves all who knew her a legacy of enduring inspiration to keep on loving, laughing and living no matter what life brings. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Earleen and Vera.
