Phyllis Burhenn

Phyllis Burhenn was born March 13, 1925, in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Joe and Effie (Thede) Havran. She grew up on a farm outside of Keystone and attended country school. Phyllis married Harold Burhenn on May 20, 1944; he preceded her in death on March 2, 1994.

Phyllis was a strong and witty woman. She helped farm for many years and continued to live on the farm for over 30 years after she lost her husband, Harold. She enjoyed working in her yard, reading books, golfing and was an avid card player. She also made the best homemade noodles! You would also catch her watching any Iowa State or Iowa sporting event on TV. Phyllis enjoyed traveling with her husband, Harold. She enjoyed telling stories of their trips to Las Vegas, Florida and Texas. She was also very proud of her heritage and enjoyed showing maps and telling stories of her family in Czech Republic and Germany. She loved having visits from family and especially the great-grandchildren.

Phyllis passed away on Sunday, April 14, 2024, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital at the age of 99. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; a grandson, Travis Burhenn and a sister, Lilas Winter. Phyllis is survived by two sons, Kent Burhenn, of Ames, and Paul Burhenn, of Dysart; seven grandchildren: Lindsay (Aron) Bierbaum, Zach Burhenn, Colby (Wendy) Burhenn, Tyler (Abby) Burhenn, Brandi (Tom) Harmsen, Adam Burhenn and Andrea (Nathan) Burhenn and 11 great grandchildren.

Family graveside will be held at the Dysart Cemetery.
