Marjorie Kriz

Marjorie Ann (Kopriva) Kriz, a cherished soul who touched the lives of many, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 4, 2026, at the age of 98. Surrounded by her loving family at Sunrise Hill Nursing Center in Traer, Marjorie's departure marked the conclusion of a life with devotion, kindness and enduring love.

Born on October 20, 1927, in Dysart, Iowa, Marjorie was the beloved daughter of Louis and Agnes (Kalina) Kopriva, and the middle child of three. Her early years were shaped by humble beginnings, beginning her education in a country school and graduating from Dysart High School. On October 28, 1947, she was united in marriage with Robert Kriz, embarking on a partnership filled with shared adventures and deep companionship.

Throughout her life, Marjorie embraced many roles with grace and dedication. She began her professional journey as the Dysart High School secretary and extended her talents to Pioneer, the local grocery store and an insurance company, all in Dysart. Beyond her formal employment, she was a constant presence in the lives of her grandchildren and great grandchildren, lovingly babysitting them and delighting in their visits with homemade treats like oatmeal cookies and Rice Krispie bars kept ready in her refrigerator. Her role as a cook at Dysart-Geneseo Elementary School was marked by affection and pride, earning her the fond nickname “best toast maker around” from both students and family alike.

Marjorie's greatest joy came from her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She found immense pleasure in watching them participate in sporting events and various school activities, nurturing a supportive and encouraging presence that they carried with them throughout their lives.

Marge's zest for life was further enriched by her love of music and dance. Together with Robert, she traveled across the United States to attend polka festivals with friends, embracing the vibrant culture that polka music offered. Their passion culminated in the distinguished honor of being named the polka King and Queen of the State of Iowa–a testament to their joyful spirit and community involvement. Robert passed away on February 1, 2001.

A devoted member of her community and faith, Marjorie belonged to the Catholic Order of Foresters, St. Joseph's Altar and Rosary Society and the Cedar Valley Polka Club. Her faith and friendships were pillars of strength throughout her life.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter Sue (Rick) Crawford; her brother Alfred (Maxine) Kopriva; sister-in-law Donna Kopriva and many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
