The Dengler Domain: Music Battle Royale 2
A battle between two forces from the past has come to fruition. Time for another edition of the Dengler Domain Music Battle Royale. Last time, Debby Boone took home the title, and the competition is back with two more contestants. In one corner is the 1940 hit song, “I’ll Never Smile Again” performed by Tommy Dorsey and His Orchestra with vocals provided by Frank Sinatra and The Pied Pipers. Its contender is Glen Campbell’s 1975 hit song, “Rhinestone Cowboy.”
First up is “I’ll Never Smile Again.” A romantic dance is a necessity when this song is performed. It is the definition of a slow dance song. The rhythm flows with a young Frank Sinatra’s voice, and Ol’ Blue Eyes’ elegant voice controls the rhythm and vibe of this song. Going into the song, I thought Tommy and His Orchestra would be featured in a bigger way, but it is not necessary with Sinatra’s voice. A few solos provide a beautiful relief when Sinatra’s voice is not featured. This song has a very different pace than any song in today’s society. It would be a wonderful song on today’s radio.
Next up is “Rhinestone Cowboy.” Glen’s commanding voice carries this song from verse to verse. The song’s simple rhythm does not confuse the listener, but it is almost too easy to understand. The rhythm’s powerful beat causes the listener to feel Glen is not messing around. I was aware of this song before listening to it, but nothing is better than the buildup to the signature verse, “Like a rhinestone cowboy.” One difference is the background instruments of this song are more pronounced than in “I’ll Never Smile Again.” With Glen Campbell being a country singer, I thought it would have more twang, but it has none. This surprised me, but I like it. This distance from typical country music makes for a wonderful song.
After discussing these two songs, only one arbitrary winner can exist. Before I get to this decision, both of these songs were vastly enjoyable and beautiful. If they were played more today’s radio, they have a good chance at succeeding.
But now the answer everybody has been waiting for. The winner of the second Music Battle Royale is “I’ll Never Smile Again.” I cannot go against the Sinatra’s voice. While this song lacks instruments, it makes up for with his wonderful voice. The pace of “I’ll Never Smile Again” is slow but very enjoyable. I loved listening to this type of music because big band music is not easy to come by. Thankfully, I found it on YouTube. With that, it is the conclusion of another edition of the Dengler Domain Music Battle Royale. If you have any music you want me to listen to or compare, shoot me an email at sean.h.dengler@gmail.com. I look forward to seeing these wonderful pieces of music!
