Chelsea Sesquicentennial Celebration
The Chelsea Sesquicentennial Celebration is quickly approaching! The planning committee has a line-up of contests, displays and activities planned for all ages during the celebration which will be held Friday evening, July 25 and all day Saturday, July 26.
The celebration will kick off on Friday evening, July 25 at 6 p.m. with a community picnic. Everyone is welcome to pack a picnic basket of bring a grill to cook your own meal. (Note: this is not a potluck-type meal. Each person/family should bring their own complete meal and beverage.) This should be a good time to relax and socialize with your neighbors and friends. Perhaps you can even get reacquainted with some old friends you haven’t seen in a while.
If you would like to enter the kolach contest and vie for the title of “Kolach Champion,” then be sure to bring your entry of two dozen kolaches (any flavor) between 6 and 7 p.m. that evening. Anyone is welcome to enter this contest. (You do not have to be a Chelsea resident to enter.)
Also, from 6 to 7 p.m., all Chelsea children (i.e. those with a Chelsea mailing address) that are age 10 or under can sign up for Little Miss Chelsea and Little Mr. Chelsea. The winners will be randomly drawn later in the evening and will be asked to ride in Saturday’s parade.
Contest judging will begin at approximately 7 p.m. For those men who have entered and have been growing a beard for the beard contest, they will be judged at this time. Contestants must be signed up for this contest prior to July 25. (Sign up at the Chelsea Savings Bank in Chelsea.)
Another fun contest we encourage everyone to enter is the costume contest. Don’t wear your Halloween costume for this, but instead dress in 1864-era clothing and show up at 7 p.m. to be judged. Prior registration is not required for this contest.
At around 7:30 p.m., all contest wineers will be announced. For the beard contest, prizes will be awarded in eight categories: longest, darkest, grayest, thickest, best groomed, most unusual, youngest and oldest. For the old-time costume contest, prizes will be awarded to the best-dressed family, man, woman and child. In addition, the Kolach Champion, Little Miss Chelsea, Little Mr. Chelsea and the King & Queen of Chelsea’s 150th Celebration will be announced at this time.
Please note that all Friday evening activities will be held in the yard north of St. Joseph’s school (just east of the church). In case of rain, these activities will be held in the St. Joseph’s school gym.
A full day of activities is planned for Saturday, July 26. You can start the dat off with a delicious breakfast from 6 to 9 a.m. presented by the Chelsea Community Club. The 4th Annual Chelsea Car Show will begin with registration starting at 8 a.m. For more details about the car show, contact Aaron Balvin at 641-751-3928 or Jason Balvin at 641-485-2234.
Starting at 9 a.m. there will also be antique tractors, equipment and gas engines on display. If you have equipment you would like to display, please contact Tom Upah at 641-484-5847 (tractors & equipment) or Jerry Balvin at 641-485-7441 (for gas engines).
Starting at 10 a.m., the Vendor and Craft Show will be open in the gym. A history of Chelsea, human tractor pull, and many more activities are on Saturday, so check out the Chelsea’s 150th Birthday Facebook page for more information!
