ACCESS welcomes community volunteers

County Attorney Brent Heeren met with the Tama County Board of Supervisors Monday morning to discuss a 28E Agreement with Benton County regarding delinquent court debt collections. Heeren said Benton and Tama County have elected to participate in the collection of delinquent court obligations on the county level. According to the 2013 Census, the population of Benton County is 25,599 and the population of Tama County is 17,576..

Under a 28E agreement, an annual delinquent collection threshold of fifty thousand dollars would apply to the combined collections of the counties, according to Iowa Code. By combining their efforts under a 28E Agreement, Benton and Tama County hope to meet the required $50,000 threshold in a more timely manner.

The Benton County Attorney and Tama County Attorney have discussed entering into a 28 E Agreement with each other regarding delinquent court debt collections and have determined it would be in the best interest of both counties to do so.

The Tama County Board of Supervisors approved the 28 E Agreement.

Tama County Engineer, Lyle Brehm, opened bids on a paving project in Buckingham. Bids were from Cunningham Construction for $153,897.68 for asphalt: D & F Construction from Cedar Rapids for $150,029.75, Hasbro for $157,741.32 and Manatts for $145,230.53, these three for concrete. The low bid of Manatt’s was approved. A representative from Manatt’s told supervisors and the county engineer that they could start work as early as next week, weather cooperating. Supervisor Larry Vest asked how long it would be necessary to keep traffic off the road after the work was done, and was told seven days for the cement to cure.

Angie Schreck was present to request use of one room in the courthouse. Schreck is with ACCESS (Assault Care Center Extending Shelter and Support). Their mission is to address the roots and impact of domestic and sexual violence through services that enhance safety, empower survivors, and promote understanding and social justice in a community.

Access offers multiple programs to achieve their mission. They are rooted in enhancing safety and support for survivors of all ages, race, backgrounds, gender, sexual orientation, and ability. All services area free and confidential.

ACCESS welcomes community members, students and professionals to help in serving and supporting victims. A 32-hour Victim Advocate volunteer training is designed to prepare you to understand the dynamics of victimization, methods of crisis intervention, and empower in ways to help victims plan for safety Volunteers can take on a variety of roles after training including crisis Line advocate, medical response advocate, legal advocate and shelter advocate.

Claims for the past week came to $92,321.08.

This week, County Engineer Lyle Brehm gave a road report to the Tama County Board of Supervisors, Larry Vest, Kendall Jordan and Dan Anderson, Monday morning at their regular meeting.

Brehm reported they were in Buckingham pouring concrete on one street there. Also minor concrete work is being done in Grant Township where a box culvert will be placed. When the bridge crew is finished in Grant Township they will move forward to Clark Township, section 26 for more bridge work. Brehm said the concrete crew has been delayed a short time but now was ready to go to work.

Lloyd Chyma, Board member for the Enright-Schrader Post #73 of the Iowa Department , requested a three day Liquor License for for the Moto-Cross track effective September 19,2014 through September 24, 2014. The Moto Cross track is located between Montour and Garwin. This is for a Class B Beer (BB) (including Wine Coolers) outdoor service. The board voted unanimously to approve this permit.

Claims for the past week approved for payment came to $165,774.42.
