Fisher, Vest win local races
Incumbent Republican Dean Fisher of Garwin has defeated Democratic challenger Ben Westphal of Marshalltown in the race for the District 72 Iowa House seat. Fisher holds a 4,160-2,300 advantage with a small number of absentee ballots remaining to be counted.
The District 1 County Supervisor seat was the only other contested local election, with Larry Vest (R-rural Traer) defeating Margaret Babinat (D-rural Clutier) 1,603-902.
Incumbents Brent Heeren (R-Toledo), county attorney, Deb Kupka (R-rural Clutier), county recorder and Michelle Yuska (R-Toledo), county treasurer, ran unopposed.
Tama County election results also mirrored statewide results in the race for the U.S. House and Senate seats. With 95% of precincts reporting, Joni Ernst defeated Bruce Braley by a 52-44% margin statewide. In Tama County, the result was a similar percentage with a vote total of 3,492 for Ernst and 2,844 for Braley.
A 51-49% win for Republican Rod Blum over Democrat Pat Murphy in the District 1 U.S. House seat was also mirrored by Blum’s 3,581-2,953 advantage among Tama County voters.
Perhaps the only aberration came in the race for Iowa Governor, where incumbent Republican Terry Branstad defeated Democratic challenger Jack Hatch 59-37% statewide, but had a margin of just over 200 votes (3,240-3,022) in Tama County.
