Sept. 11 marked with memorial tree planting

Fifteen memorial evergreen trees of different sizes were planted on the south side of the C.R. Roberts Trail east of Holstead Street.

Varieties included: Black Hills Spruce, Medora Juniper, Tannenbaum Mugo Pine, Montgomery Spruce, Fat Albert Spruce, Yellow Arborvitae, Iowa Juniper, Fastigiata Spruce, Dwarf Techny, and Vanderwolf Lumber Pine.

Eight FEMA Americorps volunteers stationed in Vinton helped plant as part of their observance of 9-11. Eight Tree Board members were in involved in the tree planting. The holes for the trees were dug by Don Sparks, and each tree was planted in rich, black soil which was brought to the site.

Funding for the memorial trees was provided by the Tree Board’s business partner, John’s Qwik Stop, and by a grant from the Trees Forever/Alliant Energy Branching Out Program.

A number of family members of those for whom trees were planted were on hand to share in the tree planting.
