Union High School wins Student Food Drive
NHS members pose with their collected food items at the Northeast Iowa Food Bank.
Union High School participated in the 2017 Student Food Drive hosted by the Northeast Iowa Food Bank from October 2 through November 13, 2017. The school’s National Honor Society (NHS) planned and coordinated activities within the building and community to make this year’s drive a success. There were seven schools within the Cedar Valley participating, with Union High School going head-to-head against Hudson High School in the medium-school division. Activities included advisory competitions, drawings for Chick-fil-A sandwich coupons and t-shirts, a morning NHS Cafe, and Trick-or-Treating for Cans in La Porte City, Mount Auburn, and Dysart.
On November 13, the NHS members delivered the collected food and money to the Northeast Iowa Food Bank and volunteered their time helping with the BackPack food program. Union High School beat Hudson High School this year by raising $2,017 and 1,854 pounds of food equaling 9,613 meals produced for the Northeast Iowa Food Bank! Overall, Union High School finished in second place behind Cedar Falls High School. The Union High School NHS thanks all the students, families, and community members that provided food and/or money in the quest to help decrease food insecurity in northeast Iowa!
