Gold Star Hall Ceremony to recognize Pfc Meredith Winter

Iowa State University’s Great Hall will be the host of the annual Gold Star Hall Ceremony on Veterans Day this year, honoring Private First Class Meredith Deroy Winter formerly of Dysart and three other former students who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Pfc Winter attended Iowa State University from 1938-43 before enlisting in the Marines during World War II.

According to a biography published by Iowa State, Winter was assigned to G Company, 2nd Battalion, 21st Marines, 3rd Marine Division in Guam on July of 1994 before the invasion of Iwo Jima on February 21, 1945. Winter was killed in action on February 28, two days after his 26th birthday. Initially buried in the 3rd Marine Division Cemetery on Iwo Jima, Winter came home on May 5, 1948 as his body was returned to the United States for permanent burial in Dysart Cemetery in Dysart.

The Gold Star Hall Ceremony will take place on Monday, Nov. 11 at 3:15 p.m. in the Great Hall of the Iowa State University Memorial Union.
