Letter to the Editor: Showing up when it matters most

As a constituent of House District 76, if you want to know how a candidate will treat you in office, look at how they treat you during the campaign.

Recently, the League of Women Voters and Black Hawk County NAACP hosted a candidate forum. This was a critical opportunity to ask questions about our schools and the future of our communities.

Matt Reisetter, the Republican candidate for HD 76, left an empty seat at that forum. While his opponent, Calvin Horn, showed up ready to answer to the voters, Reisetter skipped it to ride around a Trunk or Treat event in Dysart.

His campaign’s excuse was that he “cannot be in two places at once.” That means he made a deliberate choice. He chose a photo opportunity over facing his constituents. He chose dodging questions over discussing the serious issues impacting our families.

We do not need politicians who hide from the people they want to represent. Whether you live in Cedar Falls or a small town in our district, you deserve a representative who is not afraid to answer the hard questions. District 76 needs leadership that shows up when it matters most.
