Dengler Domain: Skyowa

Nothing is more beautiful than the Iowa sky. Staring up at the beautiful blue sky with clouds partially filling the space and jet clouds happened a lot growing up. Having the ability to see horizon to horizon for each cardinal direction was an opportunity which was not appreciated enough.

During the day it is great to look at as during dawn or dusk. More impressive than the best painter’s skill, the colors filling up the sky are beautiful. So many wonderful variations of pink the sky has to offer at sunset. When storms rolled in last Friday evening, a break in the clouds revealed a gorgeous deep orange. This interaction between the storm clouds and sunset made for a unique sight which held my interest longer than intended. If only I were in the country, the view would have been better.

Having the ability to see the sun poke over or set on the countryside horizon is a magnificent sight. For those living in the city, one must drive a bit to get this wonderful view. People love a beach sunrise and sunset, but an Iowa sunrise and sunset are a close second. While no ocean of water, the sea of corn and beans suffice. What makes the sunrise and sunset so great is the time of year varies with the colors. Despite the cold temperatures, winter provides picturesque settings.

Seeing the wide-open sky can also be foreboding. One year as we were doing a fielding drill during one afternoon baseball practice, the sky over Traer was ominous. It was hot, humid practice, and the sky was engorged with deep blue over Traer and the North Tama athletic complex. Anyone with any knowledge of storms knew something big was brewing. As the sky darkened as I stood at second base, dust blew off the Traer elevator. No more than five seconds later, everyone on the baseball team also felt the cold front roll through. The temperature dropped 10 to 15 degrees in a matter of seconds. The storm started, and practice was over.

Having a full view of the sky is inspiring. It connects us with our ancestors. They may not have the technology, the same expectations, or diet, but every human to ever exist has shared the same sky. We have all shared the same sunrises, sunsets, and endless horizons. Seeing these picturesque sights each day is wonderful, and we are blessed to live in a state which provides these occasions. Time is now to enjoy the sky.
