April 11 Dual Meet, Jesup

The Union High School Golf team experienced a nice evening out for a change on Monday, April 11 in Jesup, but found the greens tricky as we usually do when visiting Jesup.

The winds kicked up in the middle of the round which made the Par 3 4th hole as treacherous as ever. The boys were led by Junior Mack Schmitz (Runner-Up Medalist) for the second meet in a row with a round of 43. That was equaled by Junior Ty Lorenzen and Jesup’s Jack Miller who won the cardback to earn Medalist Honors. Seniors TJ Freeland and Josef Schmitz rounded out our scoring with rounds of 45 and 47 respectively.

The girls team earned their first dual victory over Jesup in a number of years and were led by Senior Belle Olson (Runner-Up Medalist) who is playing in her first year of high school golf. Belle is a quick study and possesses good swing mechanics. She has also been putting in time after scheduled practice too as she wants to make her one year of golf the best it can be. We look for even more good play from her as the season progresses.

Our scoring also included a 61 by Senior Sarah Michael and a pair of 65’s from Junior Ava Mehlert and Freshmen Amelia Schmitz. Sophomore Lydia Albersten actually had the second best score on the day with a round of 58 while playing JV. That performance is going to get her in the varsity lineup at the next meet. Jesup was led by Hannah Bovy with a 55 that earned her Medalist Honors.

April 12 Quad Meet, Grundy Center

It’s a busy part of the season right now, and the team had some tough conditions to brave at Grundy Center on Tuesday, April 12. It’s always windy on the Town and Country Golf Club with minimal tree cover, but last night was especially challenging as the winds were around 40 mph.

As a team we actually improved by 12 strokes over the night before at Jesup with several of our girls improving their scores substantially. Senior Sarah Michael led the way with a 54 which earned her a 4th place finish behind the Top 3 Grundy Center girls. Sophomore Sydney Schmuecker got going as well with a 58 improving 13 shots from the previous night at Jesup. Our scoring was rounded out by Senior Belle Olson with a 62 and Sophomore Clara Carlson with a 64. Grundy Center had two players, Avery Dirks and Brylee Hoeg, tie for the top score of 47 earning Medalist and Runner-Up Medalist Honors.

The boys did not fare as well in the extremely windy conditions as they saw what they felt like were good shots go awry. This can really have a toll on your focus and inner ability to perform but something you must overcome in spring golf in Iowa.

Grundy Center’s Dexter Whitehill led all scoring with an impressive round of 37 in a wind that could account for a 4-5 stroke difference in scoring compared to a day with normal conditions. He was followed by teammate Ashton Martens who shot 41 earning him Runner-Up Medalist.

Union was led by Senior TJ Freeland with a 44, followed by Junior Joe Bistline one shot back with a 45, next was Senior Josef Scmitz with a 48, and Junior Ty Lorenzen with a 49.

It will be more of the same on Thursday when we travel to Pine Lake and the winds are expected to be very high as well.
