Union boys golf just misses state cut

Team looks forward to next season

We knew going into the Class 2A District Tournament held on Monday, May 16, in State Center that the margin between advancing to state and going home would be razor thin and it was. We felt like if we could get 4 scores in under 83 we would have a good chance to advance. We got three of those scores but were not able to get the fourth which proved to be the difference as we fell by three shots to the runner-up Hudson. We nipped them by one at Sectionals but some strong play from the middle of their squad enabled them to edge us once again. Although we are disappointed, making it to Districts is an accomplishment for any team and especially for one in the ultra-competitive environment we are in locally. The NICL Conference has two teams advancing to the state tournament with Hudson and Grundy Center doing it for the second year in a row and also two individuals, Denver’s Junior Clayton Liddle and Dike-New Hartford’s Carson Costello who is just a freshman. Next year will promise to be even more of a shootout with all these talented teams gaining another year of experience. The Class 2A State Tournament in Ames on Monday, May 23, and Tuesday, May 24, will host some powerhouse teams including Des Moines Christian who won our District with a score of 299 that included two rounds of one under par 71.

We will miss our four seniors next season including Josef Schmitz, TJ Freeland, Jackson Slater, and Adyn Schmuecker. We will be returning three of our starting Top 4 next season and know that it will be the year to get it done. We need to keep working on our games throughout the summer if we expect to come out on top.
