Union golf tees up the season
Union girls golf
On April 3, we kicked off the season in Anamosa and took third place behind Don Bosco and Anamosa. It was our first year in this invite and it was a unique setup. We started off by playing nine holes at Fawn Creek Country Club where we played Regional last year and then went to play a second nine at the Wapsipinicon Country Club which is located in the state park there. Here are the top three team results and our scores:
1-Don Bosco 407
2-Anamosa 429
3-Union 430
Union scores:
-Amelia Schmitz 102 (3rd overall)
-Clara Carlson 106
-Ava Mehlert 109
-Lydia Albertsen 113
The girls next competed at Grundy Center on April 6 against both the Spartans and Hudson.
The boys were playing at South Hills (Hudson) that same day so we were able to get a lot of our junior varsity girls on the course to get some much-needed experience on a challenging golf course.
Our varsity was led by Junior Clara Carlson who shot a 52 followed by Junior Ava Mehlert with a 54. After that Junior Lydia Albertsen had a 58 and Sophomore Amelia Schmitz shot a 60. We nearly had our goal of four scores in the 50s, however, we really feel like we can improve on these scores across the board for players #1-4. With the warm weather forecast for next week, we look to everyone’s scores improving some.
Grundy Center (184): Abbie Lindeman (Medalist) 42, Avery Dirks (Runner-Up) 44, Brylee Hoeg 46, Leah Larson 52. Hudson (237): Blaiklee Schatz 49, Anna Hasovec 61, Hailey Delagardelle 63, Avery Weisinger 64
Union boys golf
Following the season opener in Anamosa on April 3 where seniors Mack Schmitz and Joe Bistline both shot 77, the boys competed at South Hills in Hudson against both the Pirates and Grundy Center. This was a huge test for us early in the season to see where we are at versus two premier teams who were in the state tournament last year.
Hudson’s Oliver Thompson led all scorers with a round of 35 that included four birdies. We had some consistent scoring, but the fast greens made it hard for us to hole many putts.
Grundy Center won the triangular with 152, followed by Hudson with 157, and Union with 164.
Union scores:
-Joe Bistline 40
-Mack Schmitz 41
-Ryan Reifenstahl 41
-Ty Lorenzen 42
The Knights were set to compete this week against Jesup on Monday followed by a trip to South Hardin on Thursday for a triangular with the Tigers and Columbus Catholic.
