Union boys golf achieves lowest 9-hole score in 14 years

Gates, Bistline medal

On Thursday last week we made the trip up to Sumner to play. The girls were facing the defending Class 2A State Champions led by sophomore Chloe Bolte who was also the individual State Champion last year.

Par on the course is a 38 for girls with the opening hole being a Par 6. Bolte made her way around in 35 strokes and frankly made it look easy. The creek that runs through Meadowbrook Country Club comes into play on several holes and unless you are familiar with the course has a way of inviting your ball in. We were led by junior Clara Carlson who made it into the 40s with a 49.

Junior Sydney Schmuecker is also trending in the right direction with a 54. Her driving has improved and if she can start holing more putts we look for her to be in the 40s by the time our post season rolls around.

Sophomore Hannah Williams, who primarily plays on the JV squad, stepped up to fill the sixth spot for us and we ended up using her score that evening which is a confidence boost for her.

Our boys ended up the lowest team score for 9 holes that they have had in my 14 years of coaching. Our top 4 spots are all occupied by seniors, but Sophomore Tyler Gates ended up besting everyone with a round of 37 to earn his very first Medalist Honor. He has really been working hard on his iron swing and is a determined young man so we knew it was only a matter of time before he broke out and had a night. His score was backed up by three rounds of 39 to round out our scoring. We have had this as a goal for the last two years, and it was nice to reach that and especially on the round at a course that many of the players were seeing for the very first time. These are the kinds of numbers we will need to shoot at conference this week and in the post season as well if we are going to advance and make the state tournament.

Home vs. Oelwein

On Friday we played at home versus Oelwein. Junior Joe Bistline turned in our lowest 9 hole round of the year with a 36. If we can continually get this kind of play from him out of the 3 spot down the stretch, then our chances of advancing will definitely be promising.

On the girls side, junior Sydney Schmuecker continued to build on her recent individual success with a season best score of 49. If we can get three scores in under 50 consistently down the stretch we will surprise some teams and end up in a very good position for ourselves.

The Oelwein girls team turned in a good score of 187 even though they found our course to be very challenging with our narrow fairways and fast greens. They were led by Emma Smock and Zoey Reisner who each shot rounds of 46.
