Union softball opens season with a win at home before dropping two

LA PORTE CITY – Union softball opened the season with a 10-6 win at home over AGWSR on May 23 before dropping two games back to back – a road game to Class 3A No. 13 Sumner-Fredericksburg 7-0 last Thursday and home game to Dike-New Hartford 10-4 on Friday.

So far this season, Mallory Wrage has kept the bats swinging for the Knights with three RBIs and a single, double, and triple while at bat nine times. Sydney Anton has notched two RBIs, while Avery Knoop, Emily Anton, Addie Pospisil, and Brigitte Rohrer have each batted in a runner apiece.

Knoop has successfully stolen three bases for the Knights, while Ava Mills and Sydney Anton have each stolen two, and Dena Robb has stolen one.

In the field, catcher Dena Robb has notched 16 put-outs across three games. During the game against D-NH last Friday she threw at least two runners out at second who were attempting to steal.

On the pitching mound across two games and a little more than 10 innings – including the team’s win over the Cougars – Xandra Anderson has struck out 10, walked four, and allowed 11 runs, while pitcher Brigitte Rohrer in two games and seven innings has struck out four, walked five, and allowed nine runs.

Heading into the week of Memorial Day, the Knights (1-2) were set to play three games including a pair of road games – Oelwein on Tuesday and East Marshall on Thursday – before playing back at home on Friday, June 2, against Columbus Catholic beginning at 6 p.m.
