LA PORTE CITY – The Union Knights baseball team recently wrapped up the 2022-23 season under first year head coach Michael Bruns, finishing 6-20 and fourth in the North Iowa Cedar League (NICL) East division.
Similar to Union’s softball team this season, the baseball roster skewed young with the average grade level for the team being a sophomore.
Two senior players ended their high school baseball careers with the Knights, Joe Bistline and Ty Lorenzen, while three players earned All-Conference honors.
Bistline was a first team selection at first base. He notched a stellar .400 average in his final season at Union, leading the Knights with 18 batted in including one triple and five doubles, and scoring six runs with two stolen bases. He made only seven errors in 116 chances in the field.
Freshman Sawyer Spence was selected for second team at second base. Spence hit .311 with eight runs batted in and eight runs scored.
Lorenzen was an honorable mention selection averaging .292 with eight runs batted in and six stolen bases.
