WATERLOO – Fifth-ranked Union volleyball brought home the Waterloo East Haley Eckerman Volleyball Tournament championship last weekend. The Knights — now 14-2 on the season heading into this past week — took down Waterloo East, reigning tournament champ Don Bosco, and Columbus Catholic on their quest for the title.

This is the second year for the tournament which is named for current Kent State volleyball head coach Haley Eckerman, a former Waterloo East player whom the Des Moines Register has called “one of the greatest volleyball players to ever come out of Iowa.”

The Knights beat Eckerman’s alma mater 2-0 (25-15, 25-15), followed by the Class 1A No. 10 Dons 2-1 (23-25, 25-18, 15-10).

During the championship match, Union beat Columbus Catholic in two sets (25-20, 25-14).

Avery Knoop led the Knights’ offense during the final match with 19 assists and four kills. Senior Gracie Klima had 10 kills.

Knights libero Ava Mehlert recorded nine digs to lead the Knights’ defense, while Knoop had six.

Emily Anton was 8-for-8 at the serve line with three aces. Dena Robb had two aces. Klima, Knoop, and Reagan Glenn each served one ace apiece.
