Knights drop games to Columbus and Denver to begin the new year

LA PORTE CITY – The Union Knights girls basketball team tipped off the new year last week with a pair of tough losses at home – falling to Columbus Catholic 62-29 on Thursday, Jan. 4 and then Denver 43-32 on Friday, Jan. 5.

The Sailors’ rebound game ultimately sealed the Knights’ fate on Thursday with Columbus Catholic notching 51 total rebounds to Union’s 27 (seven from sophomore Reagan Glenn).

Knights senior Reagan Sorensen was also off her usually-stellar 3-point game, making only one of a dozen attempts.

Senior Brigitte Rohrer led the Knights with eight points, Sorensen scored seven, senior Ava Mills scored six, and Glenn finished with four points. Junior Lily Lorenzen added a field goal.

Both teams racked up 16 turnovers apiece while the Sailors managed a dozen steals to the Knights’ seven.

Entering the week of Jan. 8, Union was 3-9 on the season.

Weather-permitting, the Knights were scheduled to face Class 2A No. 1 Dike-New Hartford (9-1) on the road Tuesday followed by another road game against Wapsie Valley (3-6) on Friday, Jan. 12.

As of Monday, Sorensen remained No. 1 across all classes in 3-point attempts with 149; No. 2 in Class 3A for 3-pointers made with 35 – just behind Benton Community’s McKenna Kramer with 36; and No. 2 in 3A for field goal attempts with 211.
