LA PORTE CITY – Last week started off well for us at home on Monday, April 8 vs. Wapsie Valley. We ended up sweeping the medals at La Porte City Golf Club with our boys and girls both going first/second individually.

Our boys team was led by senior Sam Fehl who shot a 41. Junior Tyler Gates got his first medal of the season in his runner-up finish which was one shot back, 42.

For the girls, senior Clara Carlson broke the 50 barrier with a round of 48 to lead us. Senior Ava Mehlert shot 54 and edged out Wapsie’s Anna Curley on the cardback for runner-up honors. This was her first individual medal of her career so she was very excited about that.

Team Scores

Boys – Union 178, Wapsie Valley 193

Girls – Union 216 (Wapsie Valley only had 3 scores so no team score to report)

The most eventful meet of the week was definitely on Thursday, April 11 at South Hills vs. Hudson and Gladbrook-Reinbeck. Clouds were looming at tee-off and the elements definitely came into play half way through the round. As the girls varsity groups were finishing up, they were met with wind, rain, and even hail.

The teams nearly duplicated their feat on Monday of sweeping the medal stand. Amelia Schmitz and Clara Carlson each shot a round of 51 with Amelia winning the cardback for medalist honors.

On the boys side, senior Sam Fehl unfortunately got off to a rough start on the first hole again but played a steady round after that en route to a 41 which earned him runner-up medalist. Hudson’s Brady Hanson was the medalist with an impressive round of 37 in tough conditions.

Team Scores

Boys – Hudson 167, Union 175, G-R 194

Girls: Union 214 (Hudson and G-R only had 3 scores each so no team score to report)
