Union golf tees up at NICL Conference, Schupbach Classic meets

It was a busy week for us last week with 18-hole events at the Comet Invite on Monday, April 29, for both the boys and girls. Both teams finished toward the middle of the pack with sophomore Brock Bergmeier and senior Clara Carlson winning All-Tournament Honors. Both teams were back again in action on Tuesday for a triangular with Grundy Center and Dike-New Hartford. The girls team was missing two of our top five varsity players so we finished a distant 3rd (223) behind DNH and Grundy Center who shot 181 and 188 respectively. The boys shot their low 9-hole round of the year and finished in second with a score of 169 behind a strong showing by Grundy Center who shot a 150 that included three rounds of 37. Dike-New Hartford finished in 3rd with a 174.

The week culminated on Friday with the boys playing in the NICL Conference meet at Pheasant Ridge and the girls playing in the afternoon in Grundy Center where they took part in the Schupbach Classic.

The boys team had a goal of finishing in 6th place (we were 11th statistically throughout the season but felt our best golf was to come). We put together some solid rounds and were led by senior Sam Fehl who shot 82, junior Tyler Gates shot 83, sophomores Brock Bergmeier and Brandon Frush shot 84 and 87 respectively to round out our scoring. Oliver Thompson of Hudson was the Medalist with a 1 under par 71 and Judd Jirovsky was Runner-Up with an even par 72.

The Schupbach classic turned out primarily to be a showcase of the area’s best NICL conference teams. Oelwein shot a blistering 345 to win by 7 shots over a Chloe Bolte-led Sumner-Fredericksburg team. Bolte shot her second consecutive round of 2 under par 70 in this event to earn Medalist Honors. Those teams were followed by DNH who shot 376. Jesup 378 who were led by sophomore Morgan Krall who shot 75 to earn Runner-Up Medalist, Grundy Center 382, Union 416, South Tama 429. and GMG at 517. This was our lowest 18-hole score in nearly 20 years so we were happy with the effort. We are going to try and break that mark on Monday (May 6) at the girls conference meet at Irv Warren. The goal for the Regional Round on Friday at Anamosa is to break 400 and advance to the second round for the first time since the early 2000s.
