Union-North Tama soccer teams wrap up 2023-24 season
LA PORTE CITY – The Union-North Tama boys and girls soccer teams both had solid seasons this year.
The girls team finished 7-11 overall and advanced to the semifinal round in the postseason, dropping the final game to No. 4 Denver, 3-0, on Wednesday, May 22 in a rescheduled matchup due to the severe weather which swept the state the evening before.
Several seniors graduated on May 19 including Charlie Keegan, Molly Clark, Molly Grote, Adelyn Sienknecht, Dacey Powell, and Dena Robb; however, the Knights have huge numbers and plenty of talent planning to return next year including rising senior Avery Knoop who led the Knights in total goals (10) and assists (6). Rising sophomores Hinley Mast and Mallory Karr were second and third on the team in scoring, and both should be back next season as well.
The Knights will need to replace senior keepers Dacey Powell and Dena Robb.
The Union boys junior varsity team – in just their second season as a program – continued to show strong growth, finishing the season with a 5-4-1 record. Seniors Brock Ruzicka, Blake Taylor, Alexander Dickerson, Mason Herman, and Austin Martin will all be missed.
The boys will return some younger and experienced players for next season including rising junior Hunter Brustkern who led the team in total points scored. He will be joined by rising senior Kengo Uchiyama-Hansen, rising juniors Grant Severtsgaard and Brandon Frush, and several other Knights ready to keep the young program moving in a positive direction.
Thank you to the players, parents, and coaches for supporting these great student athletes throughout the season!
