Redhawks rattle off sweep of GMG netters

GARWIN — The Class 1A No. 10 North Tama volleyball team handed GMG its first Iowa Star Conference South Division loss, defeating the Wolverines in three sets on Thursday, Sept. 19. The visiting Redhawks (12-12, 3-1) ran away with a 25-18, 25-19, 25-14 victory.

Kruiz Ewoldt led North Tama with 19 kills, and Cayleigh Heller had 10 kills. Lily Sell chipped in six kills and Heller, the setter, had 26 assists.

Addison Hochstetler led the Redhawk defense with 22 digs, Kylie Calderwood had 12 and Haydn Wilson 11. Heller, Kahlia Even and Briar Blake had one block apiece. Calderwood served 23-for-23 with seven of North Tama’s 14 aces.

Five different players had three kills each to lead GMG (11-4, 2-1), and junior setter Hadlee Hempy tallied 10 assists.

Heading into this past week, Calderwood was ranked No. 3 in 1A for serve successes with 213 while Hochstetler was No. 1 in 1A (No. 5 across all classes) for digs with 312 – nearly 70 more than the closest competitor.

The Redhawks (3-1) were second in the Iowa Star South as of this past Monday, just behind BCLUW (4-0) and ahead of GMG (2-1).
