Union crowned NICL East champions
SUMNER – The Union Knights volleyball team has again claimed the NICL East Championship following a win over the Cougars. Union hit the road to take on Sumner-Fredericksburg on Oct. 1. The Knights entered the contest off a strong weekend performance at the Marquette tournament where they went 5-0 and claimed wins over Monticello, Marquette Catholic, Maquoketa, Cedar Valley Christian, and Bellevue. The young Knights team has shown continued growth throughout the season and is looking to be at its strongest when postseason play begins. Both teams entered the Oct. 1 match with a 3-0 NICL East record. The broader NICL conference boasts eight ranked teams in what is considered the toughest conference in the state, regardless of class. All three sets were competitive, but the Knights ultimately swept the Cougars 25-23, 25-21, and 25-20. This week, Union was scheduled to host the first night of the 2024 NICL Volleyball Tournament on Tuesday, Oct. 8. The Knights entered the tourney as the No. 1 seed overall.
