Union-North Tama soccer kick off with clean sheet vs. Vikettes

LA PORTE CITY – The Union-North Tama girls soccer team marked the season opener on Monday, March 31, at home with a 1-0 win over area rival Vinton-Shellsburg.

The lone goal of the game was scored by Knights sophomore, center defensive back Scarlette Duclos who managed the clutch shot against the Vikettes in the final 25 seconds from just outside the 18-yard box.

Against V-S, senior Avery Knoop recorded four shots-on-goal, while sophomore Hinley Mast had three, and seniors Ava Monat and Josie Bergmeier had one apiece.

Knights keeper, junior Addie Pospisil made six saves.

On Friday (April 4), also at home, the Knights took on No. 8 Dike-New Hartford, dropping the match 4-1. Knoop scored Union-North Tama’s single goal with an assist from freshman forward Ellie Pospisil.

Knights head coach John Simon deemed Knoop the ‘player of the match’ on social media following the game, writing, “Avery played all 80 minutes, scored our lone goal tonight, helped on defense and hustled her tail off all game.”

During the JV squad’s 4-1 win over the Wolverines, Ellie Pospisil recorded her second hat trick of the season with three goals and an assist to sophomore forward Taylen Smith.

This week Monday, Union-North Tama (1-1) was scheduled to face top-ranked Denver (1-0) at home before traveling to Reinbeck on Thursday to face the Rebels (0-2) and then back home today, Friday, April 11, for a match with Cedar Rapids Jefferson.

The Telegraph will feature coverage from this week’s games in next week’s edition.
