Knights suffer series of shutout losses in grueling week at home
LA PORTE CITY — The Union/Gladbrook-Reinbeck softball team suffered a series of tough shutout losses last week in a grueling string of back-to-back (and back-to-back) games played on home turf.
The tough run began on Monday, June 9, with a pair of losses (18-0, 14-0) to Class 1A No. 9 Wapsie Valley followed by a 10-0 loss to Hudson on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, Maddy Hendershot pitched a four-hit shutout to lead Grundy Center to a 6-0 victory. Hendershot struck out seven and walked one in the win, allowing just four singles. Mallory Wrage, a G-R senior, had three of them for the host Knights (1-11).
Following the Grundy Center game, Union/G-R hosted Aplington-Parkersburg on Thursday (June 12) and finally broke the shutout curse, falling 11-1 in four innings to the Falcons (2-10).
As of press time, statistics for the June 12 game were not available.
