No. 8 Spartans forced to forfeit after defeating Union
LA PORTE CITY — The Grundy Center baseball team defeated Union Community on the scoreboard, but the Spartans were forced to forfeit the victory.
Class 2A No. 8 Grundy Center used an illegible pitcher during their 8-5 win over the host Knights (5-6) on Wednesday, June 11, forfeiting the win for the Spartans (9-2). GC junior Britt Meyer, who threw 44 pitches in Monday’s loss to Dike-New Hartford, was not eligible to pitch against Union but threw 27 pitches in two innings of work. The final score was adjusted to 7-0 for the Knights.
Union’s Sawyer Spence threw for two innings, allowing three hits and four runs while striking out two and hitting one batter before freshman Bryson DeWinter took over mound duties. DeWinter allowed six hits and four runs (two earned), struck out two, walked three, and hit three batters.
At the plate, Knights junior Ethan Winnike was 3-for-3 with two singles, a double, and an RBI. His fellow junior Mays Weber was 2-for-4 with two singles and a run scored. Senior Andrew Sadler, junior Tate Van Dyke, and sophomore Gavin Frederiksen all had one hit apiece.
For the Spartans, Judd Jirovsky was 3-for-5 with two doubles, a triple, an RBI, and two runs scored, while Ryker Thoren and Mason Thede had two hits apiece.
