Spence finishes top-third at state cross country

FORT DODGE – Union senior Sawyer Spence ended his high school cross country career last week Friday on Halloween morning by finishing among the top third of runners in the 2025 Iowa High School Cross Country Championships Class 2A boys race held at Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge.

Amid cloudy skies and temperatures hovering in the mid-40s, Spence crossed the finish line in 30th place out of 100 competitors with a time of 17 minutes, 17 seconds – a mere fraction of a second slower than his state finish last season of 17:16.8 which garnered him 40th place.

Reigning boys state champion, Grundy Center senior Emerson Vokes won the 2A boys race with a time of 15:42 – roughly five seconds slower than his 2024 finish. Denver sophomore Jesse Gomez (16:18.5) took second, Chariton junior Lucas Anderson third (16:21.8), Oelwein senior Keshaun Williams (16:26.2) fourth, and Chariton sophomore Cy Stuart (16:27.1) fifth. The top-15 individuals received medals.

Chariton won the Class 2A boys title with 42 points, well ahead of second-place Forest City (110) and third-place Oelwein (130).
