Knights boys notch NICL wins over Warriors, Huskies while breaking records

LA PORTE CITY — The Class 2A No. 8 Union Knights boys’ basketball team lambasted Oelwein here last Friday night (Jan. 16), taking down the Huskies 82-36 for their 12th win of the season and second North Iowa Cedar League win of the week to improve to 12-1 overall and 9-1 in the NICL.
Against the Huskies (0-12), Union led the entire game – scoring two-dozen points in the first quarter to Oelwein’s 10, followed by another 25 points in the second to Oelwein’s eight. In the third quarter, the Knights notched another 21 points – outscoring the Huskies by 11 – before closing out the game with another dozen points in the final.
Ten Union players scored that evening, including senior Caden Sorensen who led with 18 points (four 3-pointers). He also had five assists and two of the Knights’ five steals.
Senior Tate Van Dyke tallied 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds plus four assists and a block. Senior Ethan Winnike added a dozen points and five rebounds. Sophomore Bryson DeWinter came off the bench to score 10 points plus pull down seven rebounds.
According to the Union Booster Club, the Knights “hit an all time record for margin of victory” against Oelwein with +46 points, while also setting the all-time single game assist record with 29.
Three nights earlier on Tuesday, Jan. 13, Union notched a 59-49 conference win over a tough Wapsie Valley (9-5) – the only team to which the Knights have recorded a loss this season.
Against the Warriors, Van Dyke recorded a powerful double-double with 20 points and 15 rebounds, while Sorensen broke Union’s all-time assist record – bypassing head coach and Union alumnus Eric Jesse’s 342 – using his three assists to reach 345.
