Knights top Cougars in second-round playoff

TRAER – The Union Knights boys basketball team never trailed and rolled to an 84-47 win over the Sumner-Fredericksburg Cougars here in a Class 2A Substate 6 second-round playoff action on Thursday, Feb. 19.

The Knights led 20-11 after the first quarter and pushed the margin to 49-20 by the half. Union outscored the Cougars 25-16 in the third and tallied another 10 points in the fourth to secure the 37-point victory.

Senior Maddux DeWinter led Union with a game-high 19 points, nine assists, six rebounds, and four steals. Senior Cameron Mullen added 17 points, knocking down three 3-pointers. Senior Ethan Winnike finished with a dozen points on 4-of-6 shooting, including 2-of-2 from deep, and went 2-of-2 at the charity stripe.

Senior Tate Van Dyke scored 11 points and grabbed one rebound, while senior Sawyer Spence added 10 points and tied Maddux DeWinter with a game-high four steals.

Off the bench, sophomore Bryson DeWinter – who missed the final regular season game against Grundy Center on Feb. 12 due to illness – had eight points and six rebounds. Senior Henry Hegdahl scored five points. Sophomore Eli Grote tallied a field goal and four rebounds.

Senior Caden Sorensen – injured in the game with Grundy Center – did not play against the Cougars.

With the victory over Sumner-Fredericksburg (7-16), Union (20-3) is now one win away from claiming the District 11 championship and scheduled to play in the Class 2A Substate 6 semifinal round against Columbus Catholic (14-8) tonight, Tuesday, Feb. 24, at home. The winner will advance to the state-qualifier set for Saturday, Feb. 28, at 7 p.m. at Marshalltown High School.
