North Tama knocks off GMG, falls to East Marshall
TRAER — North Tama scored the final six points to beat the GMG boys’ basketball team 60-57 in the Monday, Feb. 16 Class 1A District 6 quarterfinal.
Kayler Morris scored a game-high 23 points to lead North Tama (14-8), and Brayton Cibula added 14 points, eight rebounds and four assists in the win. Morris made a layup to bring the Redhawks within 57-56 and then dribbled through the GMG pressure for a coast-to-coast layup to put North Tama in front for good, 58-57.
Jordan Dostal’s two free throws with 1 second left finished the scoring.
GMG (13-9) went ahead 57-54 on Easton Sash’s three-point play with 58 seconds left, but the Wolverines didn’t score again.
Rider Kupka led GMG with 18 points, while Jacoby Woodbury had 14 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Sash finished with 11 points, and Ethan Klemesrud added 10 points and five assists.
Mustangs rip Redhawks in district semifinals
LE GRAND — The East Marshall boys’ basketball team led from wire-to-wire, dominating North Tama for an 83-37 triumph in the Thursday, Feb. 19 Class 1A District 6 semifinal.
The top-seeded Mustangs (17-6) moved through the Redhawks (14-9) with ease, jumping out to a 15-2 lead after the opening quarter. East Marshall led 38-20 by halftime before outscoring North Tama 27-6 in the third period.
Senior Kayler Morris led North Tama with 10 points, including one 3-pointer; he also notched two assists and a steal. His younger brother, junior Kayvin Morris had nine points – all from the deep – while junior Brayton Cibula tallied eight points.
Cibula led North Tama’s defense with nine rebounds. Juniors Jordan Dostal and Paul Dvorak (off the bench) each recorded four rebounds; Kayler Morris had three; and Kayvin Morris pulled down two rebounds plus the team’s only block.
The Redhawks end the 2025-26 season 14-9 overall, 8-4 in the Iowa Star South – matching the 2021-22 season during which they tallied the most wins since the 2012-13 season (27-2) and made it all the way to the Class 1A state semifinals where they lost 77-52 to Boyden-Hull before dropping 80-56 to Danville in the since-discontinued consolation (third place) round.
