Union golfers tee up for 2025-26 season
LA PORTE CITY – The Union Knights are excited to get going this year and hope mother nature will start cooperating soon!
The boys look to build on some of the success from last year’s team and advance the entire squad to the second round of district play. Last year culminated with a 4th place finish at Sectional play held at Denver. We were in a good position to advance halfway through the round but came up five strokes short of doing so. Nevertheless, we did have two of our underclassmen, freshmen Nash Schmitz and sophomore Coy Mehlert, advance to districts individually. That experience should give them added confidence going into this season.
Our team also includes senior varsity starters Brock Bergmeier, Brandon Frush, and Henry Heghdahl. This group knows what it will take to advance and will be putting in the work early in the year to give themselves the best opportunity to make it happen.
The Lady Knights will be a mix of youth and a senior group that has been working their way up into the starting lineup the last couple years. Many of them just participate in golf as far as sports go but are heavily involved in a variety of the fine arts at Union.
Ella Grote and Melanie Yuska got a fair amount of varsity play as juniors last year and both are still hunting their first varsity medal which will be the goal this year. The other seniors in this group who will be vying for playing time include Taylor Baltes, Ellie Burns, Emma Davis, Madison Martin, and newcomers Breann Breitbach and Emily Anton.
The other half of the team is part of our “youth movement” that looks to make their mark early on our program. They will be led by freshman Mia Michael who came to some practices last season and has been ready to get out there and see what she can do at the high school level.
Sophomores Raelynn Wildeboer and Junior Olivia Sheffler were both set back by shoulder injuries last year and we are excited to see how they can perform this year now that they are healthy. We have also added a few more underclassmen that we feel can contribute, so we are excited for this season and feel we are in a good position to build for the future!
