Union boys win inaugural Knight Invite; girls celebrate Senior Night

LA PORTE CITY – On Wednesday, April 29, Union hosted the inaugural Knight Invite, welcoming area boys and girls teams to compete at the 9-hole La Porte City Golf Club followed by the 9-hole Dysart Golf Club.

The Knights boys team won the meet, led by sophomore Nash Schmitz who shot a 78 to earn medalist honors. In addition, senior Henry Hegdahl bested his teammate, junior Coy Mehlert and East Buchanan junior Brady Van Scoyoc in a playoff for the sixth-place medal.

Team scores: Union 336, Central Elkader 342, East Buchanan 345, and West Delaware 349.

Two nights later, the boys team continued their strong play with a dual win at Jesup Golf & Country Club. Hegdahl led the way with a 38 and beat out J-Hawk Gage Wymore on the cardback for medalist. Team scores: Union 158 and Jesup 167.

To end the work week, Union hosted South Tama and defending state champs Oelwein on May Day while also marking Senior Night for the girls’ squad.

Our Lady Knights saved their best for last, shooting a season-low team round of 212 and were once again led by freshmen Mia Michael who was runner-up medalist with a round of 49. Oelwein senior Grace Lewis was the medalist with a 39.

Team scores: Oelwein 200, Union 212, and South Tama 225.
