Union-North Tama sweeps three matches; Pospisil posts hat trick
LA PORTE CITY – The Union-North Tama girls soccer team was on a roll last week, sweeping three matches in succession to quadruple this season’s win count.
The Knights opened the week of Monday, May 4, by shutting out non-conference North Fayette Valley (4-3-1) at home, 3-0. All three goals were scored in the second half. Junior midfielder Hinley Mast, junior forward Mallory Karr, and sophomore forward Ellie Pospisil each fired in one apiece, while senior keeper Addie Pospisil had nine saves against the TigerHawks.
Head coach John Simon designated junior defender and captain Jaren Werner as the ‘player of the match’, writing on social media, “Jaren did a fantastic job of shutting down North Fayette’s offensive attempts while also getting the ball up to our forwards for a scoring opportunity. Great work Jaren!”
On Thursday, Union-North Tama traveled to Decorah to face the non-conference Vikings (4-7) in a makeup of the April 17 game postponed due to weather. The Knights were triumphant, shutting out Decorah 1-0 with the lone goal scored by Ellie Pospisil in the second half. Ellie’s big sister, keeper Addie Pospisil managed a dozen saves against the Vikings.
“Ellie scored our go-ahead goal with 10 minutes left in the game! Clutch shot! Great work, Ellie!” Coach Simon posted to social media following the game.
The following evening, the Knights traveled to Waterloo for a week-ending conference rematch with Columbus Catholic (1-9). Union-North Tama notched its second win over the Sailors with a 6-1 triumph that included a hat trick (three goals, single game) by Ellie Pospisil. Goals were also scored by Mast, sophomore forward Adrianna “Adie” Hinebaugh, and freshman forward Avery Weber.
Keeper Addie Pospisil made six saves.
