Meskwaki football concludes varsity season following trio of forfeits

MESKWAKI SETTLEMENT – The Meskwaki Settlement School’s varsity football team has concluded their 2026 football season. The announcement was posted to the Warriors’ social media on Monday, Sept. 28.

“Per the Iowa High School Athletic Association Board of Control Policy (January 2014), the continuation of a team’s season following a regular-season forfeit is determined by the IHSAA administrative staff in conjunction with the school’s administration,” the post stated. “Because this is the second time our Meskwaki Warriors varsity season has been interrupted due to a lack of available players, the IHSAA administrative staff has determined that our varsity football season has concluded.”

This fall, the Warriors competed in District 6 of 8-Man football. MSS dropped two early-season contests against HLV-TC and Collins-Maxwell. However, over the past two Fridays – Sept. 18 (vs. Clarksville) and Sept. 25 (vs. North Tama) – the Warriors had to forfeit the games. Additionally, MSS forfeited the scheduled Sept. 4 clash with Gladbrook-Reinbeck.

The decision to conclude the season came with three games remaining on the schedule (Colo-Nesco, GMG, and English Valley).

Though the varsity season is now over for MSS, the announcement further stated other levels of football may continue for the Warriors.

“We are, however, permitted to continue participating in sub-varsity football for the remainder of the fall season,” the announcement said. “Moving forward, we will explore opportunities to schedule JV football games. If we are able to secure additional games, we will communicate those details with you as soon as they become available.”
