DES MOINES – Junior hurdler Jailyn Petersen took 10th place in Class 2A girls 100 meter hurdles at the Iowa Co-Ed State Track and Field Championships in Des Moines last Friday morning – just missing out on the finals while leading the Union Knights collective charge at state this season.

Between the girls and boys teams, Union qualified in 18 separate events this year for the state meet including twice (Lauren Youngblut and Amilia Condon) in the girls 3,000 meter run.

Knights girls head coach Justin Parson told the newspaper in an email he was impressed with his team’s results but hopes next season the weather won’t disrupt the regular season as much as it did this year, particularly the stormy weather that forced the rescheduling of the NICL Mega Meet to just three days prior to Districts.

“I am super proud of the number of events we did make it in (10 and doubled up on the 3k). We missed four others by small amounts. We had a great district meet and we were well represented at state. We ran about what we’ve done all season, but I felt like we left a bit on the table in the state meet. Our efforts were great, but I think the moving of the NICL meet to the week of the district meet hurt us a bit in terms of our tapering for the state meet.”

Petersen – fresh off her appearance in the Drake Relays – placed the highest at state this year among Union athletes/teams. She smoked through the finish in the 100 meter hurdles preliminaries with a time of 15.85 seconds just behind ninth place Kate Green of Cascade with 15.80 and eighth place Leah Bolluyt of Spirit Lake who crossed in 15.78. Only the top-8 qualified for the finals.
