Local author at La Porte book signing

Iowa author Linda Betsinger McCann will talk about her newly released book, Prohibition in Eastern Iowa, at the La Porte City Library on Tuesday, September 9, at 6 pm. Everyone is invited and there is no admission charge. Linda will have copies of all her books available for purchase.

Prohibition was a thirteen year period of time in U.S. history that changed many things, and affected how law enforcement is perceived in the 21st Century. Begun as a way to control drinking of alcohol, it turned into outright disregard for the law, and allowed gangsters to gain a hold on their illegal activities.

Prohibition in Eastern Iowa looks at how Prohibition affected the area in which we live. From farmers who used their corn to earn money by making alcohol from it, to bootleggers who brought in liquor from Chicago, to visits from Al Capone, to gun battles on a two-lane highway…Eastern Iowa saw it all.

Interviews with people show how the normal person was swept up into the craziness. Even if you think you know about Prohibition, you will be surprised by this happening in Iowa.

Linda is also the author of the “Lost Towns” series of books. She has done Butler, Bremer, Black Hawk, Linn and Cedar Counties. Grundy, Franklin and Chickasaw are expected in November.
