Record numbers turned out for the 18th annual Old Iron Days Car, Truck and Bike Show. The event which was sponsored by the Dysart Development Corporation was held Friday, July 24 from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. An estimated 1200 people attended.

A family friendly atmosphere provided entertainment from young to old. During the show car enthusiasts were treated to music provided by Monte Wenger’s Klassic Kar-Tunes. The Dysart Lions Club served close to 650 giant tenderloin suppers. Shear Sisters Salon offered kids crafts during the event as well.

Car enthusiasts who entered vehicles to be judged came from all parts of the state but some lived just a block away.

Harold Langbehn of Dysart entered three vehicles in the show, a 1981 El Camino, a red convertible and a Chevy SSR. He won his first award ever Friday evening with his 2004 Chevy SSR in the 2000-Present category.

It was hard for him to pick a favorite but he really enjoys driving the convertible around.

The group reported over 600 meals were served near the conclusion of the event.

His favorite part of the show though is the people.

“I meet a lot of people I know. Of course I’ve lived here long enough I know a lot of people so they stop and talk to me,” Harold said.

Another Dysart resident, Sherry Reifenstahl also brought a car she and her husband Mike bought in western Iowa.

The car was a bare shell when they bought it and they have rebuilt it piece by piece over the past 10 years. Parts have come from Ebay, car auctions and swat meets.

The rebuild took about seven years in total.

“We had an amazing turn out tonight. I’m glad people are starting to do things again, while keeping safe of course,” Sherry said.

A couple who came from north of Dysart had a very special story to share. Lorne and Jean Necker are from Sumner and visited Dysart to celebrate a special milestone. The two were celebrating their 55th wedding anniversary on July 24th, the day of the show. They brought their 1958 Ford Skyliner hardtop convertible. The car was Lorne’s first vehicle that he purchased in 1961. It sat in storage for 42 years until recently when it was unearthed as a restoration project. Lorne spent six years rebuilding the vehicle, completing all of the work except for the paint job and the sheet metal work. The couple enjoys taking the car around to various shows and hope to make it to several more this year.

Awards were presented just after 8 p.m. Best of Show went to Ken and Deb Crawford of Cedar Falls for a 1933 Ford Coupe.
