TOLEDO — The Monday, June 8 Tama County Board of Supervisors meeting drew a large crowd that included state Rep. Dean Fisher (R-Montour). Following the public comment period, most attendees filed out, leaving only a few remaining. Several people again spoke about dust control on 290th Street, along with representatives of the quarry. The matter was discussed, but no action was taken by the supervisors because the issue is expected to be resolved by the quarry routing its trucks along an alternate route.

The supervisors then held a public hearing on an FY26 budget amendment. Following the hearing, they approved two resolutions related to the amendment.

A lengthy discussion followed regarding Secondary Roads Department union employees working four 10-hour days, a schedule that has been in place for years. Supervisors Curt Hilmer (R-Dysart) and Curt Kupka (R-Chelsea) were at odds over the issue. Kupka favors maintaining the traditional schedule of five eight-hour days to provide coverage throughout the workweek. Hilmer, who worked for the Secondary Roads Department for more than two decades, supports continuing the four 10-hour days to provide employees with three-day weekends.

During the discussion, Hilmer said, “If you guys want to take it away from them, take it away from them, but you’re going to piss them off.”

The Secondary Roads Department’s union president attended the meeting, and alternatives were discussed, including having some employees remain on a five-day schedule while others worked four 10-hour days to ensure coverage each day of the week. After considerable discussion, no resolution was reached. The supervisors requested additional information on the subject, which the union president agreed to seek.

The supervisors approved seeking bids and contracts for maintenance of the Union Grove Lake property and other derelict properties.

A liquor license for Windy Goat Acres was approved.

Action was finally taken on copier contracts after revisions were made and approved.

Claims totaling $239,925.02 were approved.
