TRAER – A North Tama teacher who was previously placed on administrative leave after being charged with child endangerment has now resigned.
“I am writing to inform you I am resigning from my teaching, JH Stuco [Junior High Student Council], and HOCO [Homecoming] contracts for the 2025-2026 school year,” Jennifer Boerm wrote as part of her resignation letter which was received by North Tama County Community School District administration late in the day on Tuesday, July 15, and obtained by the newspaper. Boerm had been under contract with the district for the 2025-26 school year as a special education/at-risk teacher in the secondary building. The upcoming school year would have marked her sixth with the district.
Back on June 23, Boerm, 40, was arrested by the Tama County Sheriff’s Department at the Traer Municipal Swimming Pool for public intoxication and child endangerment following a report of a female seated in a lounge chair who appeared “out of it.” According to the criminal complaint, the reporting party also relayed the woman had nearly dropped the infant child under her care.
Once a deputy arrived on scene, Boerm allegedly admitted to consuming alcohol and provided a breath sample which registered above the legal limit.
On June 24, she entered a plea of not guilty in Tama County District Court to the single aggravated misdemeanor charge of child endangerment (the public intoxication charge was held over for review) and was released on her own recognizance, waiving her right to a preliminary hearing. That same day, a temporary no contact order was filed for the now four-month-old minor victim in the case. A hearing to lift the no contact order has been set for Aug. 21 at 9:15 a.m. following a modification request filed on July 23.
Last March, Boerm pleaded guilty in Marshall County District Court to operating while under the influence-first offense following a Nov. 29, 2024 incident in Marshalltown.
During the Monday, July 21 meeting of the North Tama school board, Boerm’s resignation was approved by the board as part of the consent agenda. When contacted by the newspaper on Monday, Superintendent John Cain said administration had not yet had a chance to sit down and determine the next steps for Boerm’s full-time special education position.
As of press time and according to the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners (BOEE) database, Boerm holds a valid Master Educator License.
Telegraph Note: After this story went to press, Boerm’s trial information was released. She is now charged with four counts of child endangerment-substantial risk stemming from the June 23, 2025 incident in Traer. Arraignment has been set for Aug. 14 at 9 a.m. in Tama County District Court.
