LA PORTE CITY – The Union Community School District has launched a new website at www.uknighted4u.org to provide residents with information about the $18.5 million general obligation bond referendum on the November 4, 2025 ballot.
The site includes information about the district’s proposal to modernize its schools and provide more resources for students. It features project plans and renderings, details about the estimated tax impact, answers to frequently asked questions, and a form for submitting questions.
“The referendum website is a new source for information about the proposal to update the Union Community School District for the future,” Superintendent John Howard said. “It’s important for everyone to understand the facility challenges our students and staff face and the solutions that are possible with an approved bond. We believe this online tool will keep that conversation open and ensure residents have more ways to engage with the district.”
If approved, the referendum would provide up to $18.5 million to finance projects at all four attendance centers.
The oldest portions of Union High School are 70 years old, and much of the building’s mechanical and electrical systems are in poor condition. The school’s heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems need replacement, and the steam boilers are about four decades past their expected lifespan.
Under the bond proposal, the high school’s HVAC systems, electrical systems, and roof would be replaced. The district would extensively renovate the school’s classrooms, media center, kitchen, cafeteria, and restrooms.
Bond revenue would also fund the construction of a new wrestling room addition to consolidate activities for the boys’ and girls’ wrestling programs. The existing wrestling room and boys locker room would be converted into a space housing four separate locker rooms, with offices for coaches and officials, and added storage.
Upgrades to mechanical systems are planned at Dysart-Geneseo Elementary and La Porte City Elementary. To improve student and staff safety in both schools, bond funds would be used to install new fire alarms, door hardware, and exterior public address systems. Interior glass corridor walls at La Porte City Elementary would be removed.
At Union Middle School, improvements to the HVAC systems, roof, restrooms, and door hardware are planned.
The district also would construct a new bus barn to replace a more than 20-year-old building. The new facility would hold six full-size buses and provide better protection for the fleet.
