TRAER – On Wednesday, May 6, North Tama County High School hosted the annual Senior Awards Night during which more than $100,000 in scholarships were announced.
The ceremony was held in the gymnasium and began with a public reception at 6 p.m. Punch and appetizers were served and for an hour there was busy conversation among students, friends, donors, family and the public. The program started at 7 p.m. with presentations of various honor awards followed by scholarships.
Thirty-two scholarships ranging from $300 to $4,000 were provided by individuals, organizations and family memorials totaling about $46,000. These community scholarships have been in place going back many years.
The North Tama Dollars for Scholars (NTDFS) presentations were the last half of the evening. The NTDFS scholarship first year is $1,000; renewable the second year for $1000. This year only, the $1,000 was enhanced by a $500 Bonus from NTDFS investment gains in 2025 and by another $500 for each of the 20 awardees. Dr. John (’72) and Lori Dedic donated $10,000 this past March, directing it to go to each awardee this year. A total of $60,000 was awarded to the 2026 graduates by NTDFS.
North Tama Dollars for Scholars is committed to supporting as many North Tama graduates as possible to better prepare for the work of their choice with as little debt as possible. They also want to build a highly trained workforce for this fine state of Iowa. In that light, scholarships are available to students with a GPA ranging from 2.0 to 4.0. Thirteen students received scholarships to attend community colleges or trades programs. Eleven students received NTDFS scholarships to attend four-year programs. Many of our graduates are going into various branches of medical work or construction/electrical trades.

A remarkable 85% of the North Tama 2026 class is going on to postsecondary education.
Former NTDFS President Jared Bauch stated that more than 70% of the scholarships were funded by memorial gifts in remembrance of family and friends. “We receive amazing support from alumni classes, the North Tama community, and the North Tama faculty, staff and administrators,” he said. From May 2025 to May 2026, North Tama Dollars for Scholars received 248 gifts ranging from $25 to $15,000.
Congratulations to these graduates and to the faculty, administrators and parents who encouraged them and to the North Tama community which supports all of them. North Tama Dollars President Teresa O’Meara commented, “What an evening of celebrating our students and the community’s support through these many scholarships! It’s so exciting to see the various areas the students are choosing to pursue.”
Thanks to the work of Levi LeRue, the ceremony was livestreamed. The entire program can be viewed on North Tama YouTube. Neil and Merna Donald, former North Tama teachers and regular NTDFS donors, did just that, with Merna writing in an email, “It was impressive to realize the number of students who were honored and the amount of funding that was awarded. The renewal is an incentive to keep their grades up and continue their education.”
Lee Valenta, North Tama Class of 1974, also watched the livestream. He emailed, “I was so impressed by the number of scholarships that were awarded. It warms my heart to see how committed everyone is to the future success of these young adults.”
