Tennis team has week of ups, downs

The Union Knights boys tennis team had an up-and-down week, with several strong performances in doubles action and mixed results in singles.

On April 16, the Knights took on Grundy Center at home and earned a close 5-4 team victory.

In first singles, Robert Leipold fell to Riley Wells by a score of 4-10. Rick Bauer had much better luck in second singles, knocking off Tyler Eidell 10-1.

In third and fourth singles, the Knights ran into some problems. Austin Pauling and Casey Tecklenburg fell 3-10 and 6-10, respectively. Cole Pippert and Joel Wauters earned victories for the team with their impressive performances in fifth and sixth singles. Pippert won his match 10-3 and Wauters notched a 10-6 victory.

In first doubles, the duo of Leipold and Bauer tallied a 10-7 victory over the opposition. Pauling and Tecklenburg, playing out of the second doubles slot, were not so lucky. They lost their match by a score of 2-10. Pippert and Ribble won their third singles match by a score of 10-4.

MVP of the Grundy Center meet was Rick Bauer, who lost just one game in his straight-set defeat of Eidell.

The following day , the team was right back at it, facing Northern University High in the friendly confines of the Union High tennis courts. Under slightly windy and cool conditions, the team saw some of its progress erased, as the group was unable to record a single win in match play.

Leipold, Bauer and Pauling combined for just two wins in their first, second and third singles matches. Tecklenburg was held winless in 10-0 defeat at the hands of Luke Huber at fourth singles. Cole Pippert was the only Knight to win more than one game, notching two victories in his 2-10 defeat. Wauters also recorded a single victory in a 1-10 loss.

In doubles action, the Knights saw slight improvement, but were still a long way from being competitive. The group record just six victories among the three doubles teams. The final team score was NU 9, Union 0. MVP of the meet was Robert Leipold for the fight he showed in his match against superior talent in first singles.
