Union golf rolling toward tournament with mixed results

The Union Knights boys golf team has continued its streak of early season success with several strong performances over the past week. In the span of just a week and a half, the Knights have participated in two meets and an invitational. They would have made it four, but the meet against Dike-New Hartford was postponed.

On the 19th, the boys were in Waterloo to take on South Tama and Hudson. Cordt Holub shot a 43, which was the lowest score of the day for the Knights. Cole Hinders shot a 46, with Austin Klein close on his heels with a 47.

Dillon Brandt and Nick Weich both overcame trouble on the par-5 middle of the course to even their scores out at 50 by the end of their rounds. Matt Miller finished with a 54 through nine holes.

The following day, the Union boys made another road trip, this time to take on Benton in Van Horne. Dillon Brandt emerged as the day’s top performer, finishing his round with a 46. Holub, Hinder and Miller all entered the clubhouse with scores of 50 when the day was done.

Nick Weich tallied a 54 to Keith Weich’s 58, and Andy Heckroth finished the day with a 63. Ray Sagasta was not far behind, shooting a 64 on the day. Dobson Douglas finished with a 72.

Saturday was a big day for the Knights, as they traveled to Grundy Center for an invitational. The event gave the team a chance to try their luck at two full rounds of 18 holes, giving them a chance to capitalize on extra course time and learn from their mistakes.

Cordt Holub, who was the team’s most consistent performer, finished the day with a 95 after shooting a 50 on the front nine and a 45 on the back nine.

Cole Hinders shot a 49 and 48, respectively, to end the day with a 97.

Matt Miller showed the biggest improvement of the day, and shot a 46 on the back nine after struggling with a 53 on the front nine. He ended with a 99 on the day.

Austin Klein worked his way to a 103, shooting a 51 and 52. Nick Weich hit the clubhouse with a 105 after posting a 52 on the front nine and a 53 on the back nine.

Dillon Brandt rounded things out at 109, improving greatly on his opening round 57 with a 52 on the back nine.

Head Coach Scott Denner is pleased with the way his team has been hitting the ball when they play up to their potential, but definitely sees room for improvement as the season progresses into its late stages.

“Right now we are having a lot of ups and downs,” Denner said. “Once we start getting more consistent with our ball contact and eliminating penalty strokes, I think we can improve as we head towards tournament time.”

The Knights are back in action on Friday, April 27, with a meet against Aplington-Parkersburg on the road. The boys will also participate in a tournament against BCLUW on Monday, April 30, before looking forward to impending conference tournament play, which begins May 7.
