Volleyball reels off seven straight wins

Now that’s a winning streak. The ladies of the Union volleyball team are 14-2 following seven straight wins, and are second in the state with 480 kills as a team this season.

The girls recorded two 3-0 shutouts against Jesup and Hudson at home last week before heading to a tournament in Le Grand on Saturday. The Knights were rarely tested, beating all five of the foes they faced that day.

The opening victory over Roland-Story set the tone, as the girls won 2-0. Lauren Barz had three aces in the serving game and 23 assists. Raini Hilmer had six digs.

Union beat West Marshall twice on the day, including a 2-1 victory in the first match in pool play. Sophomore Maria Wrage had six kills on eight swings. Union promptly dispatched Iowa Valley 2-0 to move onto the playoff round, where they beat Des Moines Christian 2-1 in three sets. Wrage again had six kills in that contest.

The championship game was a rematch with West Marshall. Union won the first set 25-13 before dropping a hard-fought second set 23-25. The decisive third set was again close, with the Knights coming out on top, 16-14. Lauren Barz had three kills and a whopping 39 assists in the match. Breanna Allen had 16 digs on the defensive end.

The girls traveled to Dike-New Hartford for a road contest on Tuesday, September 11, and return to tournament action at Benton, Van Horne on Saturday, September 15. The tournament is set to begin at 9 a.m.
