Pork Producers donate to Tama Co. K9 Unit

The Tama County Pork Producers donated $2.500 toward the purchase of a Canine Assistant to work with a Tama County Deputy. Pictured as the presentation was made are (L to R): Tama County Pork Ambassador Landon Calderwood, 2015 Tama County Pork Queen Rachel Kopriva, 2015 State Pork Queen Christy Calderwood, Tama County Pork Producers President Phillip McKenna, Tama County Sheriff Dennis Kucera, Tama County Deputy Brian Kendall and Tama County Deputy Casey Schmidt.

The Tama County Pork Producers donated $2,500 to the fund for the purchase of a new dog for use by the Tama County Sheriff’s Department. Sadly, Deputy Joe Quandt lost his canine partner, Nikki, to cancer just this July. She was a valuable asset to the Sheriff’s Department and will be sorely missed.

Having a Canine Assistant to work with a Deputy is beneficial for all residents of Tama County. According to Tama County Sheriff Dennis Kucera, “The dog is a full service dog. It is used in patrol, searches, rescue, apprehension of suspects and drug search.”

Tama County Pork Producers recognize the value of a Canine Assistant and have long been supporters of the Canine program. There are absolutely NO county funds used to purchase, train, food or to provide vet care. The program is funded totally on donations. In fact, when Nikki was severely injured while on duty, the Pork Producers donated $500 toward her care.

The anticipated Canine Assistant will become a member of the deputy’s family and will be with him at all times. Sheriff Kucera added, “The cost of a dog will range from $13,000 to $15,000. This includes training of the dog and the deputy who will work with the dog.”

Deputy Brian Randall and Deputy Casey Schmidt have expressed an interest in becoming the handler. Sheriff Kucera will select one of them when a trained dog is secured. Both deputies are anxious for the new dog to arrive and look forward to working with the new one.

Donations may be made to the Tama County Sheriff’s Office, Canine program Fund, 100 North Main Street, Toledo, IA 52342.

This reporter wishes to challenge the residents of Tama County to raise enough funds for TWO Canine Assistants. Get your organization, 4-H Club or service group to brainstorm a project with proceeds designated to the Canine Program. Let’s get a dog for Deputy Randall AND Deputy Schmidt!
