Judge, Vernon, Wrage win

Tuesday was a busy day – at least for Democratic voters in Tama County. This year’s primaries featured contested races only on the Democratic side as all Republican candidates ran unopposed.

In the biggest statewide race, former Lieutenant Governor Patty Judge beat out Rob Hogg and two others by a large margin for the chance to face Chuck Grassley this fall. Judge finished with 48 percent of the vote to Hogg’s 39. Tom Fiegen and Bob Krause both earned seven percent of the vote.

Monica Vernon – a Republican-turned-Democrat who was part of Jack Hatch’s unsuccessful bid to unseat longtime Governor Terry Branstad in 2014 – also benefited from high name recognition in her defeat of former Iowa House Speaker Pat Murphy. Vernon won handily, 68-32 percent, and will take on sitting U.S. Representative Rod Blum in Iowa’s 1st District race.

In the District 72 Iowa House race, Nathan Wrage earned a rematch with current Rep. Dean Fisher (R-Garwin) with a 77-23% win over John Anderson in Tuesday’s Democratic primary.

Fisher ran unopposed in the his primary, as did many other local candidates. Dennis Kucera (R) will again face Bryan Ellenbecker (D) in the Tama County Sheriff’s race this fall, and Jeff Edler (R) will look to unseat sitting Iowa State Senator Steve Sodders (D).

Laura Kopsa (D-Tama County Auditor), Kendall Jordan (D-Board of Supervisors District 2) and Daniel Anderson (D-Board of Supervisors District 3) also ran unopposed.
