Mid-Iowa Youth Beef Team gears up for big year
The Mid-Iowa Youth Beef Team (MIYBT) kicked off its 2016-17 meeting series on Sunday, September 11 in the Marshall County Extension Office meeting room. Originally founded in 2002 as the Tama County Youth Beef Team, the team expanded last year to include Central Iowa Youth between the ages of 12-18. Our mission is to increase our members’ beef production knowledge and develop their advocacy skills so that they may share their beef industry story and beef production facts with the public. Today, with the majority of people at least generations removed from any farm experience and consumers demanding more information regarding their food production, it is vital that our producers, at any age, share their personal production stories.
The MIYBT members were very successful in carrying out the Team’s mission during our 2015-16 year. Team members represented the Iowa Cattlemen and Cattlewomen accompanying Iowa Governor Branstad as he signed the 2016 May Beef Proclamation. They also met with Iowa Secretary of Ag, Bill Northey; hosted a live radio remote; conducted several training sessions throughout Marshall and Tama County, assisted the County Cattlemen with their grilling activities, and made appearances on radio, television, and in the newspapers. Twenty members were recognized by the Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation during the Iowa State Fair for their advocacy and education work.
The Team motto for this upcoming year is “Lasso-Up a Supreme 2017”. Meetings are held from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. the first Sunday of each month September through June (second Sunday if the first is a holiday) in the Marshall County Extension Office. Industry professionals will be conducting hands-on trainings during our 2017 meetings: developing feed rations, reading EPD’s, performing ultra-sounding, and leaning reproduction procedures. If you are interested in beef production and between the ages of 12-18, we welcome you to participate on the Mid-Iowa Youth Beef Team.
