Union earns team title at Cascade Invitational

The Union boys wrestlers continue to dominate the mats this season traveling to Cascade on Saturday and coming away with a team title and six champions.

Jace Hedeman (106), Brayden Bohnsack (113), Caleb Olson (132), Keegan Ellsworth (138), Hunter Worthen (152), and Stone Schmitz (160) all wrestled their way to champion titles in their respective weight brackets.

Second ranked Hedeman swiftly pinned his opponents in both the quarterfinal and seminfinal matches before taking down Cascade’s Class 1A No. 6 Brock Morris by fall in 1:18 for the 106 pound champion title.

Bohnsack received two byes before winning the seminfinal match by technical foul 16-1 over Epworth-Western Dubuque and then the champion match by technical fall 20-3 over Dubuque Senior’s Alex Kirman for the 113 pound title.

Olson won both his quarterfinal and semifinal matches by fall over Dubuque Senior and Central Dewitt, respectively. In the 132 pound champion match, Olson took down Class 3A No. 12 Nick Foreman of Cedar Rapids Washington by fall.

Ellsworth won his quarterfinal match by fall and his semifinal match by technical fall 15-0 before taking down Dubuque Senior’s Seth Connolly by fall for the 138 pound champion title.

Third ranked Worthen took a decision win 10-3 in the 152 pound quarterfinal match and then a win by fall in the seminfinals. Worthen earned a major decision win 16-4 over Central DeWitt’s Carter Donovan for the champion title.

No. 6 Schmitz was back on the mats after a bout of illness the previous weekend. He took a quick win by fall in the quarterfinal match and then a win by injury default over Midland’s Jared Crock in the seminfinals.

For the 160 champion title, Schmitz defeated Class 1A Riceville’s second ranked Lawson Losee by fall.

In addition to the six champions, Brock Ruzicka (170) and Dacoda Marvets (195) each took third place in their weight brackets.

Union captured the Cascade Invitational team title with 204.5 points followed by Western Dubuque in second with 179 points.

The Knights will see plenty of conference action this week. On Thursday, Jan. 20, the Knights are set to face AGWSR and Sumner-Fredericksburg in a double dual in Ackley. The team then travels to East Marshall High School in Le Grand on Saturday where wrestling action is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m.
